What a day. Trails were super buff and real TACKY. Verylittlle Mud and about 6 hours of Ride time.. I think everyone knocked off some personal "hurdles" today. Super fun and tons ofsessioning. We rode Ridge trail, Cedar Dust, Top of Evo, Scorpion(some rode evo) Pump track (twice), Mullet, 911, and upper and lowerBobs. 911 was fantastic and real buff. Almost cleaned the Long Skinnie on 911 but missed it by 10 ft. We must have sessioned 911 for an hour and hit the big drop to kicker like four times! Pumptrack is super packed in now and super fast. Bobs was amazing also. Great time girls and guysthanks for a great ride and the dinner at Lychee was Great..Pic is of Polo BOOSTING at the top of evo.. Only one I got today as my batteries died right after this shot

Floyd

Whistler Baby!!!!

Janette and I headed up to Whistler for the First time this year. We shared a Condo at Glaciers Reach with Brent and Silvia. Stayed three nights and rode two. Picked up my season pass and was ready to ride Saturday morning. The sun was out and the trails were in great shape. I really Love Whistler. It is Such a great place with and very large selection of terrain. Got home Monday and got to bed early. Overall great trip, Not much traffic and was really glad that Janette got to see whistler for the first time! Great to also see so many people up there from Seattle. Here is a pic of Brent hitting the Big Joyride drop. We are heading back next weekend for some more action. Janette got to ride some of the XC trails with Silvia and really had a great time. We found a Campground for next time that was real nice and only 10.00 bucks per night. This should make the trip quite a bit cheaper. The Honda fit that we got for Janette did great with all of the gear and the Gas mileage was awesome. We brought alot of our own food and tons of beer :) so it was pretty economical for us. Canada is known for expensive staples like food, beer, and Gas so being able to make the trip on just over a tank was great! Like I said earlier there were a ton of people from Seattle there and almost 15 people from our listserv group. A bunch of people got season passes also this year so it should be more of the same whenever we go up there. Here is a picture of Tracy on Crank it up. I did not get a chance to take any pictures but thanks to Julie for the ones included in the Blog. Had a great time with everyone and can't wait to get up there again real soon.

Floyd

PA, Galby, and Fun...

So Port Angeles was a Blast..Galby Was Great and bought a Season Pass at Whislter...2008 Is Looking Awesome for a good Season.... I have been riding the Road bike five days a week and trying to get "back". Been 8 Weeks and it's is really on as far as commuting . On a side note I sent the Shock from the Stumpy and the Sunday to PUSH for a revamp and it should be back in a week or sooner. It will be nice to ride a XC bike on XC trails after riding my FreeRide bike for so long. The Nomad weighs almost 10 lbs more than my Stumpy and with the CrossMax wheels almost 12lbs...Quite a difference. The Sunday Kit from PUSH is also suppose to be completly dialed in and AWESOME! I have had great luck with PUSH and can't wait to see the outcome! Full Armor Picture from Port Angeles...

PA Shuttle Day coming Up!!!

Back to PA and Galby Next Weekend and here are some recent Photos!!
This is a video that my buddy Larry Took at South Seatac Flow ride Park!!! Finally got my old account to activate.

Now let me update my life...Bought a condo in Bothell, commuting on the Bike from seattle to bothell and Bought a Full blown Downhill bike..I am really making the transfer from cross country to freeride and down hill. I've been to whistler and it is amazing!!! The Down Bike is an Ironhorse Sunday woth a FOX 40Rc2 and really rocks!!! I did two Shuttle days out in Port Angeles and they were awesome!!!

Here is my Latest report....

This was my fourth ride at Galbraith and by far the Best. Justin B, Daniel and I headed out under Sunny skies, Dry trails and by far the the best Stunt conditions I've seen there. I'm sure many of you know that the ridge trail is now rerouted through a neighborhood and still a grind to get up. I really sucked wind on my free ride rig and it was sunny hot!! We rode Cedar Dust and sessioned all of the goodness multiple times. No quick cross country ride through this time. Pure tech fun. Up Daryl's Death Climb and through Kung Fu for some more good times at least for some of us. We headed up to the towers and regrouped. Thanks guys for waiting for my slow ass. Then it was on with a local tour guide to get us to the best freeride goods that Galby had to offer. Evolution with it's drops and the Rollercoaster Giant Cedar to Rollercoaster to Huge kicker and Scorpion's new trail extension and long ladders, Gaps, and drops with "SUPER STEEP" Switchbacks . Then it was off to the New "Pump Trail with multiple doubles, berms, and booters with a few log rides thrown in...The Log ride at the end when it's complete will be sick. So with the great weather the last few days I have brought out the roadbike and been riding to work. It's been great. This saves me a boatload of money on Gas and Parking and I really like the workout. The bus ride home at 10:37pm is a breeze and my gf picks me up at the park and ride 2 mi's away from our house. 5 days a week of this and I should be in prime shape for the summer! On a side note, I have to take my vaction all at once this year so I will have to do my big rides on monday and tuesday this year but not a problem. The trails that I want to do I feel good doing solo or with one or two other riders.

Weekend on the Island...

Returned to Fort Ebey for a weekend camping Trip. Finally some more great weather. My GF had the weekend off and I really wanted to get her out for a nice camping trip and her first mountain bike adventure. WE stopped at the Diamond Knont Brewery before boarding the ferry for a growler of there wheat beer. Highly recommended! We also stopped at Whole Foods Super Market for some eats for the trip. This place is simply amazing! Being a Chef they have everything that I could imagine! Seafood, Meats, Cheese, Deli, Produce and the List goes on. The Beer selection alone is worth going here. Everything is Top notch! We finally arrived at fort ebey at quickly set up camp. After 3 years of camping with my GF and some 100 or more days of camping(no joke) we have this down to a science! She set up the tent and I got the bikes and kitchen ready. We then headed out on a adventure at Fort Ebey. This was her first ride and I was quite impressed. She was abit timid on the root sections but rode most of them. Some of them I was quite surprised that she cleared! She did great on the climbs and loved the downhills. Overall I was very impressed and she had a great time. We arrived back at camp and were quite Hungry. Dinner was to be quite easy for me but great none the less. Some Organic Grapes, Black Peppercorn Brie, Cullen Porter Cheese, Sagkit Genoa Salami, Rosemary Flatbread, Fresh Baked Ciabatta, Saison Dupont Farmhouse ale, Golden pheasant Lager, and a knife to cut it all!! What a way to finish the Day. The cheese was amazing. The Beer the Best in the World! We had a great time and turned in to a great night of sleep. We took a quick ride in the morning and enjoyed sights of Eagles and the smell of the ocean. What a great trip.

Rat Pac!

In the Little town of Roslyn, Washington on the East Side of Snoqulamie Pass is a Trail System Called Rat Pac. My Good Friend Erik has always spoke very Highly of this trail system with it's Fast Flowing singletrack to it's high Berms and Compression Drops. There are also some elevated features, Ladders, Stunts, and Jumps. So 22 riders leave the parking lot in Roslyn and head up to the Top of Rat PAc. It was really hot and being that were not used to the heat here in Seattle the sweat was pouring from body. I decided to Bring the Nomad with New MAxxis Minion UST Tubeless Tires. These tires are super Sticky and at 2.5 they are also super wide and very heavy! I also opted to bring the Full Face Helmet, Full Pads and my Downhill Backpack. There were some pretty Tough hills and I really noticed the 38-39lbs of the Nomad and had to push rather than ride more than a few times. We finally get to the top to regroup and Pad Up. We than head into the trails. Real nice with lots of flow. Bob B, Brad, and myself led the charge and were really hauling. Bob and Brad are awesome riders and we were having a great time. This being my first time here the stunts would come up real quickly leaving not much time to see the other side or check them out. There were a few stunts that I would not hit but most I would on a second time around. I did however clean about half of them. The compression jumps were real nice and the high berms were really fun. The Jumps were small to Medium but real fun with the Gap over the Log being the Best. The best part about this trail is there are ride arounds for all of the stunts so riders of all abilities can ride here. The Last Stunt was a Skinnie Bridge (about 10 inches wide) over a ravine. To come off of the Bridge would mean a 10 foot drop to the bottom, not something that I wanted to experience. So as I rode into the Feature my mind took over and before I knew I was over the Bridge. Smooth as silk and I really nailed it! I love the feeling of accoplishment after riding such difficult features. WE that proceeded to head back up a looooong Fire Road to the exit trail and Rode Back down to the Parking Lot. The Last Trail was very fast and we really enjoyed ourselves! Thanks Erik A for a great ride and also for driving! Your new truck ROCKS!

Finally! Needlees to say My GF and I had a great day instead and we went to the Snoqulamie Brewery for some of their Spring Fever ale and some eats. The Spring Fever Ale is one of my FAvorties and on Draft it is even better! We also saw X Men 3 which we enjoyed.

So today I was in Bike Mode. I went to GHY Bikes in Renton to check there shop out and Met AJ and his crew. Great Group of Guys and a Great shop. I returned back home and was at a dilima. Did I want to go on a Mountian bike ride, and urban-skate park ride or a Road ride? The trails would be in shity condition due to the rain and I did an Urban Ride on Sunday so a ROad Ride it was. I got the Road bike out and put on my spande"X" and Dove in. My goal was around 40 miles or so. I rode from Issaquah to Downtown Seattle up to Queen Anne and Back home to Issaquah. One of my other goals was not use the Triple ring today. No Problem there. Total ride mileage was around 47 miles and about 2 and half hours. After the Ride I headed home and Brought out the Jackal for some Street Play around the neighborhood. Great ride and only one close call with a Car!

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://northwestfreeride.blogspot.com/2006/06/finally-no-rain.html' title='Finally! A lot has happened. My Brother had a new Baby. Totally Awesome! He's real happy and everything is going well.

Here is a Pic, Can you say WestSIDE! I am real close with my brother Brian and this is a very Special moment for me. My nephew's name is Kelly (after Kelly Slater) and he, like my brother and I, will surly love the ocean as well as our love for Bikes (both Moto and Mtn). His Mother Steff (aka KID) is doing great and shedding her Mom weight in record time.

It's been raining a shitload here in Seattle and Havent been on the bike for 2 weeks. This is real disapointing for me as it's my sole outlet for excercise right now and with work being real hectic (as usual) I need some sort of outlet. Luckily we got to ride today. Erik A. Had to take his truck into the shop tonight so I Led the ride in his Place. 7 Riders took to the trails in some great Sunny weather. After 2 weeks off the Bike and an Urban Session in the U district this Morning, IAB
Kicked My ass! We all regrouped at the 5 way and headed in. The trails
were a mess right off the Bat with a lot of Mud from the previous weeks rain. We moved over to Ice rose and Tour De Stump and the trails were a bit drier. Buck Horn was nice and Steve A and Travis F. both cleaned the Last hard climb. Congrats! We rode some other trails and finished with Schafer, probably me favorite trail at Tolt. After Schafer We realized that I had a Flat Tire and we tried to make it out but all of the sudden Lydia's chain broke so we changed my tire too. We all headed down IAB in a Downhill Bomb Fest. I opted to take the Log ride, even after telling my self things were wet, and crashed really hard about midway down. Dusted my self off and continued down to the cars. Great ride, Great people and Great weather...Although I am sick of the #$@$@ Mud!

On a side note, I received and Email From Vital Choice Seafood in Bellingham, Washington about some of my food photography images. They ended up purchasing two images and wanting up to 4 per month with reciepes for their website. This is great news and the extra money is great!

Tuesday At Tokul WEst

What great weather we have been having and the trails are really Dry!!! I posted our usual ride for Tuesday night in place of Erik A. as he was out due to his wife getting surgery. Bob B emailed me before the ride and said he a had a great Route for the ride and he would love to show us so I said that would be great! And GREAT it was! 17 riders ( yes 17) Took the Usual Route up Pink Ribbon, Up Bypass and to the fire road to the end of Mouse Trap or what I thought was Mousetrap. We Headed up the Trail I usually come down and this was a great climb with some tech and nice workout factors. We arrived at the Intersection for upper Outback and Bob B informed the Group that there were two ways down. Make a left and Right for Upper Outback or a Left and Left for a new trail that was called "Mousetrap". I was confused seeing that I thought we had just come up Mousetrap. I followed Bob Down Mousetrap and what a great trail it was! Bob Said that he modeled it after Rat Pac and it was quite loose and still needed some more riding but what a great trail. Plenty of Tech with a nice rock drop at the Bottom, this trail had it all. High Swoopy Berms with nice tech switchbacks. We then headed back to the Lower Outback Trail head and that I have been down many times before. Bob Informed me that we would veer left in a few yards off of outback and on to outhouse. I had seen this trail before but didn't know about it so never took it. Holy S*&*@! This trail was Soooo Nice! Fast, Lots of Flow and really GOOOOD! When Outhouse was over we climbed steakhouse back to the road. Steakhouse would be nice going down but a nice climb none the less. The glory of going back up steakhouse is that you can ride back down outback, thus getting two really nice sections of Downhill Flow. We rode outback all the way down to the skidder road and regrouped. There we smiles as far as the eye could see. We rode the skidder road to Full Bench. Bob Said that this was his favorite trail at Tokul west and I Can Understand why! Nice flow through the top sections that are followed by some of the most Tech switchbacks that you can imagine! Really Loose and Tight! Just how I like em! We cleaned the Bridge at the end of Full Bench and regrouped. Everyone seemed to be having a great time but you could see some were getting a bit tired but still having a good time. We then headed up the fire road to Bobsled. This trail was still relatively new at the start but got really good as it progressed. We then hit Monster Trail that was real FAST and Swoopy and I really liked that! Down Zoom Zoom to the SVT and some of us optioned for the trail after the SVT cutoff back to the cars and rode the Bridge at the top with a fast and Swoopy trail to a nice Drop off with two different options at the end. We met at the Parking lot across from the gun shop and everyone seemed to have had a great time. Total 13 miles, 1300 feet of climbing and a whole lot of fun! Lovin the heat. The weather has been real nice for the past week and really wanted to take advantage of the Blue Skies and Drier trails. I recently had the linkage and Bearings overhauled by Fluid Ride in Seattle and really was itching for a ride. I decided to Ride Tiger Mtn in the Morning and South SeaTac in the afternoon. Yesterday was Mother's day and we did quite a bit of business at the restaurant and was really ready for some off time. I got to Tiger about 1:45 pm for a pretty late start. It was really hot in the Parking lot and there were no water puddles (a sign) of Dry Trails. I headed up the Fire road and the Heat was brutal. No Wind either! Finally arrived at the preston trail head some 40 mins later. I can really feel the extra 11 or 12 lbs of the Nomad compared to the Stumpy on these long fire road climbs. Next was Preston! This is where the Nomad leaves the Stumpy in the Dust! It is a dream going down and really performed well!! Headed over to Northwest Timber and was really feeling the heat! Continued on the Cleaned the whole trail but was tired when I got back to the Car! Packed up and headed To Center Cycle in Renton.

I have been talking to Shane about getting an Urban/Dirt Jump Bike for a while and today I Finally went for it. I ordered My Santa Cruz Jackal. Santa Cruz Has stock so it should be here in the few weeks. Pretty excited about this bike as I really want to explore the Dirt Jumps and Urban Riding that Seattle has to offer. I got a really good deal on it. I also sold some extra parts that I had laying around and a few Large Format Prints To people at work (For Mothers Day Gifts) so that pretty much funded the cost of the bike. This was nice! I will be starting to Commute to work on my Road Bike Two days a week starting next week but I will also take the Bus a few Hours early 2 days a week with the Jackal to Get a few hours Urban Riding in Downtown Seattle. I have been eyeing several lines, Stair Gaps, Skinnies, and Various other urban Style features in the past 6 months that I can't wait to ride!

So after ordering the Jackal I drove to South SeaTac for a night Ride. The days are real long so lights are not needed anymore. I arrived a few minutes late but caught up to the group just before they were entering the FlowPark. I had not eaten anything but a Few Gels and Cytomax all day so I was feeling a bit run down. Nothing like a few runs through the flow park to forget about hunger. I was nailing the drops and kickers perfectly! I hit a new line that was a little bigger than my usually and nailed it to. Some of the other riders commented that I was NUTS but I assured them that it was all good! Took about five runs through the park and really had a good time. I really wished I had my Full Face Helmet on though. It just makes me feel a lot safer when I am pushing my progression on Jumps and Drops. On a side note, the Nomad was loving the bigger drop today. I was very Impressed. There is also a new series of Dirt Jumps at the end of the Flow park and really want to try it out with the Jackal. After the flow park we rode the trails for about an hour and a Half and a great time. SeaTac has really Buff trails and some sections have some REALLY nice FLOW. Headed back to Issaquah after the ride to a wonderful Sunset and a great day of Riding! Tomorrow is Tokul west with 13 other riders. Should be a great time. I am thinking of taking out the Stumpy. It's Getting Lonely!

Eric

It's Been A While!!!

Okay...It's been a while and haven't posted. I rode Tiger when It was Dry and What great trip!! So Fast on the nomad and Loved it! What a great ride. No takers as it was a late post. But the Weather was Absolutely Beautiful!!!! The trails, especially Preston, were in Great Shape! Ran In To Brian Jones and Boomer At the Rock Wall on NW Timber. What A great Job that man has done as well as the others who have helped out on the trails on Tiger. I really Love the northwest, Especially in the Spring and Summer!!! Hooray! For Daylight savings time too! Rode Tolt and it was Fantastic Too.. Got A South Sea Tac Fix on Monday and Got some Flow time in the park and the usuall Drops were Fantastic with the Coil Shock and the New spring in the Van 36. Rode Tolt and Tokul and they were both Great. Tokul was awesome but had some problems with creaking in my bike so slowed me down on the way up. But the way down...What another story.... Was loving the NOMAD today...Lower Outback was like a Rail Road...The Lower Trails were also Prime and I pushed Real Hard..Didn't see any other riders for a while. I took all of the hard lines on the way down and Just relished in the moment! My Downhill skills are just beginning to open up...Can't Wait For http://www.whistlerbike.com/index.htm#!@#

Eric

Tiger Opens !!!

Nathan and I Left the Lower Tiger Parking lot/ Pond Area (I Always can Tell what the trails will be like by the amount of water in the Parking lot Pools) around 11:15. The weather was beautiful and everything seemed nice. It was great to get back to Tiger. We headed Out NW Timber and it was fairly dry. The Retaining wall that BBTC has been working on looked great and we soon arrived at the end of NW Timber. Very nice ride. We Saw a Wild turkey on the way over to Preston and that was a sight as I have never seen a wild turkey and was quite afraid as the number of his brothers that I have cooked in my kitchen is staggering! Anyway, We arrived at Preston and took a small break and then Headed up. I forgot to mention that Nathan was on a Single speed and was Just amazing! Preston was in great shape and the New work Looked great on the trail. There were four Tree falls on the way up that either need to be cleared or were placed there on purpose. I don't know? Other than those trees everything looked like it was draining very well. I've seen Preston wetter. We arrived up top and Took a small break and Than continued to head back down the way we came. I was On my Nomad and Nate on his SS and we were Flying. The Nomad was amazing and really loved the New bike. Preston was slow in places due to water and mud but Bone dry in others. Great time for 4 miles and we headed over to Nw Timber to Finish the ride. The Sun was out and it didn't Rain. It was great to get back to tiger and we had a great Time...Total Miles around 17 and nothing but good Times!!!

Rainday At Tolt!!!

I really think that When you Put your bike on the Car to go on the ride you are signed up for that It some how offends the weather Gods! Not 2 minutes after the act it started to rain. I was still going as the Doppler showed just a small cell. Got to love the Internet!
When I arrived there was no one there. But after a few minutes Doug, Travis, and Shane arrived. But After 20 minutes none of the other riders had shown so I called Mr. A our ride leader and he had canceled the ride due to rain. Maybe this was a sacrifice to the Rain Gods as it stopped raining within minutes. The four of us headed up IAB and regrouped. Only having rode here 40 or so times I felt that maybe now I can lead the way. We started off with the Time Trail Course and All was well. The Trails were in great shape and the pace was fast. Travis then Led a few trails, Mystery, Oxbow, Schafer Both Ways and than Doug Led Some, Bear Claw Both ways, View Point, Bob's and We Did some others. We had a great time and missed all of the other Usual Tuesday night riders. Total Ride Time around 2 hours and Just under 11 miles. No rain the entire Ride and we only used our lights at the end of the ride. Missed you E... These rides aren't the same without you.

On a Side note. I picked up some new platforms to replace my Specialized Lo-Pro Mags on the Nomad. Thanks Downhill Zone for suggesting these awesome pedals, the Speedplay Drilliums. After tonights ride I was so Impressed. Super Stiff, Large Platform and Super GrippY. The Specialized Lo Pros will go back on the Stumpjumper for the GF as we just got here some riding gear so she can ride. She was a little spooked with clipless pedals.

I also Stopped by Fluid Bikes in Shoreline, Washington to check out there store. Zeb the owner was a great guy and the shop was geared to Freeride and Downhill. I picked up a new pair of 5.10 Impact Shoes to have a second pair on hand. These shoes rock for Platform pedals and with the new speedplay drilliums they are amazing!!!

Eric

Galbraith and Some Time Off!

Well, I have been working quite a bit and got some time off Finally. Took a Trip up to Bellingham, Washington to Ride at Galbraith Mtn. I have been there once before and really enjoyed it. We arrived at the Parking lot for Galby and There were 13 other riders waiting. It was not raining but had been raining for a while before we arrived. We hit the trails and The mud we encountered! Up the ridge trail and I knew what we were in for. We hit Cedar Dust and I lead the way. Cleaned the Rock on CD and Rode the skinnie that Scared the shit out of me last time. We continued on and rode some other trails. I crashed really hard on the Hip at Wonderland and what an awakening. Glad I had my armor and Full Face Helmet on. I took a picture of Justin on the Big Drop at wonderland and it turned out pretty good. I also Crashed on one of the Drops on another trail. I slammed my head into a tree pretty hard but the helmet took it all and I was fine. The Mud on the trails was sooo slick!! When I came off of the Drop I landed but when I put the Brakes on the mud was so slick my bike drifted into some trees. We got a little lost but found our way to Bob's trail and I again led the way down. It was great and I hit everything on it. Fun Times were had and I thank Erik "wrong way Trail" A. for such a good Time. E, you have been a great friend over the last year and I hope we can ride many more rides in the future...

Spring Is Here! This was Doug's first trip to the worm. What a BEAUTIFUL day. I really wish we didn't have to have so many rainy days to get the few precious days of sun but oh well.
The trails were in amazingly dry conditions and Super nice. We rode Mr. DNA 1 and 2. Nice and Fast super tacky!. We then Rode down through the Jumps. There are some nice Dirt Jumps there and some nice
drops as well as some big Gaps. Back up the Hill to Tapeworm and The fun begins. I forgot what a great time this trail was and Doug seemed to be having a Blast! We sessioned the Teeter totter and continued on.
The rest of Tape worm was in Great Shape and Doug led the rest of the way. Next we were looking for the BIG Log but wound up on Parasite. We rode two and half laps in both directions. I think I like this trail the
best out of all of the trails at TOP. We finally Found the BIG Log and it was BIG. I have heard everyone talk about this and really wanted to try it. It was really dry and so it was a go. First try, no go. Got about half
way down and came off. Second attempt all the way down but came off the side right at the end. Third try Cleaned it and Wheelie Dropped the Logs at the end. I should have stopped there. Fourth attempt I get all
the way down to the end and my bike comes out from underneath me and a I Go Flying off the bike and log and crash to the ground. Thank god for Pads though. Get back on the bike and Clean the Log on the next
Try. We head back to the car and Finish the Ride. What a great time and Thanks Doug for coming out and riding with me. Ride Time 2 Hours and about 8 or Nice Miles.

When Doug dropped me off I went in the house and tried to relax. No Go. I saw the sun through the windows and I had my riding gear on still so I got back on the Bike for a tour of Issaquah. Rode down Newport
way to 900 and Out to Front street trying to find anything to Jump off of or ride on. Found a few things that were fun but earlier in the day Doug had told me about a small skate park by the High school so I went to check
that out. Nice banks with some nice Hits. The Look on the Kids faces there when I rolled in on my Nomad was priceless. After that I found the old high school trail and remembered the Ride reports from the Thrilla south.
Climbed up to the Power lines and Down the trail to the Highpoint way parking lot. Turned around and headed back down. It was great decent. SOooo FaST! Got a flat though but it was a slow leak and I didn't have to change
the Tube. Traveled back through Issaquah and finished on the Hill to the Zoo and my House. Great Ride, Great Weather, and Great Times. God I love the Stuff!!!

ERic

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://northwestfreeride.blogspot.com/2006/03/spring-is-here-finally.html' title='Spring Is Here! Had A Really Good time and Finshed in 6th place out of twenty riders. I raced on my specialized and after riding the Nomad for so long I was not used to it anymore. It's much lighter and doesnt track as well. It climbs better on extended climbs but not on short tech climbs. Just two different bikes. After a little warm up we were about to start. Some how I went out second. When I went to get a place card all of the places were taken execpt for the first two. Oh well, I liked the pressure but I thought it was funny how people called there places out so quickly. We started out in 2 min intervals and I was underway. Felt pretty good and about 10 mins in hit my pace and felt real good. The course was nice but some spots were hard to find and I had to slow down thinking I had missed the turn. I never got off course but still would have loved to roll the course prior to the race. I think this would have helped quite a bit. Most of the races I have been seeing lately all have pre race course rides and most of the riders seemed to be doing that. Anyway, about halfway through I crashed on a log and Slammed my knee so HARD! I got up and The pain was immence. I pushed through the rest of the course and my knee felt better but still I was in Pain. After the race we rolled the course again. It was a really nice course but still I thought It need to marked a bit better. On the second time on the course we Missed a turn and lost some time. Still a nice Roll Though. Got back from a great ride and Headed to work.

Well, After Crashing pretty hard at the time trial at Tolt on Saturday and My Knee was quite swollen Sunday morning. I decided to Not race but go and take pictures.
Got to the race about 2:00 and was able to get some images of Nando, Bill, Casey, Ross, and Doug C. Quite a turn out. I really missed racing but had a good
Time taking pictures.

The weather was beautiful and after I got some snaps of the BBTC people my GF and headed out to Ebey for some camping and some low impact riding.

The trails on Ebey were in perfect condition. My knee felt better so I was able to at least ride and enjoyed myself for a nice three hour tour of Ebey. I really like this place.
After the Ride I prepared my Usual campfire cuisine. Tonight it was Muscovy Duck Breast with Haricot Verts (French Long Beans), Fire Roasted Fingerling Potatoes,
Caramelized Shallots, and a Nice Stone Ground Mustard Sauce.
The Second Dish was Chipotle Smoked Baby Back Ribs with Carmel Honey BBQ Sauce and Camp Made
Pico De Gallo. We dined and Drank and Had a great time.

Got some really good Sleep and awoke to blue skies and a nice two hour ride. I really Love the Bluff trail first thing in the morning.
It makes you LOVE Washington! Headed back Via Deception Pass and Stopped to see the Guys at Bicycle Center in Everett. Nice Shop.
If any of you at the Race want the full size images drop me an Email. I got Pics of other Racers so if you Email me your Race number I can see If I have some Images.
Fabien, I think I have some of you too...

Thanks for the Great time and the race. Hope some of you people can join me on my campouts this summer. I love Cooking for a group!! I think you might like it too!

A Look Back

This is a post in responce to a friends Fourm Post on Mtbr.com:
http://forums.mtbr.com/showthread.php?p=1618135#poststop

Nice write brother...I am the Nomad Man...Funny, I didn't really think twice about the old ride that you had, just that it was your trail builder ride. I more respected you for riding it. I thought it was great. I really agree that a lot of us get caught up in the upgrade hoopla.

When I was 13 years old, I got hit by a car riding my BMX bike Across the Street. A Lady hit me going 50 mph in huge Cadillac. I flew 40 or so feet across an intersection. She hit me so hard she knocked me out of my shoes. I remember a police man picking me up and walking me by the Cadillac and the front end looked like she hit a light pole. I had some knee bruises and was in a wheel chair for a bit, had a lot of scrapes and cuts, but was lucky not to be killed . The point of this is, because my bmx bike was tacoed, and we didn't sue the lady, she bought me a bike of my choice. She was very poor, so she didn't have a lot of money. I chose the Schwinn High Sierra. This was my first foray into Mountain Biking. A few months later my mother passed away. This was I really hard time of my life and I needed an outlet. I rode the piss out of my mtn bike. I Loved it. These were the days of Tom Ritchey, Gary Fisher and the such. I rode all the way until I was 16 or so.

After that, while I was working at a bike shop, I got a road bike(Schwinn Tempo) and a better full rigid(specialized stump jumper) and continued to ride. I mainly rode the road bike and raced quite a bit. But I always loved my time on the Mountain Bike. My Friend Mike Stahilie (* My adopted Big Brother*)and I rode with a group of guys out of camp Whittle in Big bear, CA By the name of Team Mania. Tom Spiegel was the head of this group of crazies and they showed us some really nice trails. As High school life consumed my everyday being, I lost interest in biking. I was burned Out.

Now the years pass, and Last March, Some 13 years Later, I stumble into a bike shop to "Check things Out". On a quick side note, I lived in Big Bear, CA for about five years before a I moved to Seattle six years ago. So I saw all of the NORBA races come through town but I was more into snowboarding so the summer was a nuisance more than anything and didn't pay any attention to the mountain bike tech. Anyway, so I went to a local bike shop Last year and saw what was available. I was completely BLOWN away. I was on a real exercise quest and had been running a lot so I needed another outlet to get my exercise fix. This would be perfect. So I set my Limit on x amount of dollars. Boy these Bikes were nice. So much suspension. Front and Back, WOW! Drops, Jumps, and the Such. I was FLOORED! Now I saw another bike for X amount More. Test Rode it and OH MY GOD! What a Difference. I scrounged up the Cash and did my research and got the more expensive bike. Okay, now I have this freakin great bike. All New and "the Latest Greatest" I find BBTC. I ride My first ride at south Sea Tac and I am Captivated! Biking becomes my life once again, Just like when I was in high school.

Okay, Fast forward 11 months. Now I am a bike freak! I have Three Bikes, Including the coveted Santa Cruz NOMAD. I couldn't be happier. I still think back every time I get on my "NEW" Bikes. What it use to be. When things were way simpler. When there was no Carbon Fiber, No Suspension(on either side), and things were way more "Pure". There still were riders who had to have the best! Even back then. The "Upgradeitis" was in Full effect. I guess it is never-ending. The most important thing is to have Fun. Who gives and "F" what your "On" or what your "riding" as long as you are having a good time. Thanks J for the look back on things and sorry if I was long winded!

Ahhh..The Rain!!

More Rain...Didn't make it to my ride this morning. It was pouring when my Alarm went off. The Last couple of nights I have been running and riding my trainer so no big Deal. I Also installed a DHX 5.0 Coil Shock on my Nomad and now understand the Word PLUSH! What a difference from my DHX 5.0 Air. It is really nice! Especially on Square edge bumps! The ProPedal is nice also. Climbs just as good as the Air but is really nice on Bumps! Preloading the Shock also proves to be way more responsive! Just Like a Motorcycle. Sucks up major bumps and really rides nice. I removed and installed the shocks myself and learned a lot about the shock system in the process. I also installed a Waterbottle cage and FOX water bottle for the Specialized 120 for the race season. No More Backpack at Race Time. I also got some Knickers and a Tighter Jersey for more aero-Dynamic Flow!(LOL).

It a separate note. I bagged the Sun Valley, Idaho trip that I was going to take in June with the BBTC Group that I usually ride with. I love riding with the BBTC guys but I recently purchased a Whistler Season Pass for 2006 and would Rather spend my all so precious vacation time in Whistler. I plan on Riding Epic Cross-Country Rides this summer as I have Sundays off withy the BBTC, but also Plan and Spending a lot of time in Whistler. It is so close and the Mtn. Biking is the greatest!!!! I love Cross Country but the Freeride-Downhill side of things is my future! I still run(jogging), ride Long Road rides(road Bike), Cross-Country Races, but Downhlill-Freeride is my favorite. I just want to do it All!!!

Indie Race Series

Sunday marked the First Race of the 2006 Indie series. A couple guys from BBTC (Erik A, Travis F) and myself decided that we wanted to go out and try this series. So we carpooled over to Belfair, Washington and arrived about 2 hours before our race. I have been training but not as hard as I should have. It is the Winter so I'll take what ever traing I can get. WE met up with some other BBTC people (Doug C, Nando B, Bill H, and Ross W) and watched the experts take off for their race. Once we got registered we suited up and started to warm up. There were about 200 people at the race so there we bikes everywhere. I rode my specialized which is about 10 pounds lighter than my nomad. We Warmed up on a small hill and spun around some fireroads. I was racing in the Sport 30-39 category Travis and Erik were racing in the Clydes category. The Single speeds went off first. Two minutes Later the 19-29, than the Clydes, than My group. The course went up the hill we warmed up on and than on to some rolling singletrack. The Pace was pretty fast and I started to feel it in my stomach. On the second hill I caught up to Erik A but I my stomach was now really hurting. I rode for a little while and he passed me again so I followed as close to him as I could. We rode for a couple of more miles together and finally I worked throughout my stomach cramps. (Mental Note: Warm up more, Forget all the supplement Bullshit, It always makes me sick) Erik Let me Pass and I started to feel real good. The course was a good mix of Single track, uphill, Fast Downhills with Berms and Some Rooty and Slick sections. Before I left Erik, Doug, Nando, and Bill who raced the 40 and 50 year old cat passed us. My goal was to catch them. I started to pass quite a few people especially on the downhills. About 5 minutes after I left Erik and caught Travis. I worked my away around him and started to lay the hammer down. I was riding with a girl who seemed to have a great pace and we worked the last part of the first lap together. Ok, now the first lap is over, I know what to expect on the second and final lap. I still haven't seen any of the other guys so I push a bit harder. It starts to rain so things are getting slicker. About halfway through the second Lap I get a glimpse of Bill rounding a corner but he is still a ways ahead. I decide that I have to catch him. I feel great now and wish I would have warmed up a lot more. My breathing is super clear and I feel like I have a lot of Power. I Finally catch Bill and We pass a series of Riders together and we start the final Downhill when he says that the rider in front of us is in his Category and he has to pass him. I gave Bill Some encouraging words and we pass the guys like he's standing still. We pushed really hard to the finish line and I just edged him out by a few inches (although Bill started after me so his time was 2 minutes better than mine) I love the sections I rode with Bill we were Flying. The Race was really good and I can't wait for the Next one at whidbey Island. I finished in 25th place out of 37 riders in my Category. Not really good but I wasn't Last. Next Race I will Warm up more!!!

Presidents Day @ Lake Sawyer

I have been riding the Trainer almost every night. So todays ride was not too bad. I rode Tokul West yesterday and it was nice but quite lonley. 17 riders took off at 10:00am with overcast skies... Tin cups was the start with some tech stunt features and Hard and Packed trails. A really nice change to the Mud. The ride broke into two groups on the way to Ed's woods (not on purpose) and the first group finally met up with the second after riding most of Ed's
Woods. Finished all of the trails in Ed's Woods and Headed over to TNT and took some time at the BIG Rock. Rode toy trail and some others that I don't know the name of. Two mech's, Light Snow and Rain at the end of the ride, and a great time. Thanks everyone for a great time and a great ride!!! Just about 3.5 hours. Next ride is Tolt on Tuesday Follwed by a few trainer rides and then a race at Belfair on Sunday. I will update.

Eric

Indoor TRAIN FEST!

Alright I broke Down and Got an Indoor Trainer. With all of the rain I couldn't help it. A good buddy of mine sings the praises of his trainer sessions so I gave in. I purchased a Kurt Kinetic Trainer. Lots of good Reviews and it came via UPS yesterday. Tonight was my first ride on it. The unit was shipped with a DVD Video Spinervals Time Saver I and I popped it in and went for the "Workout B" Tempo Time Trial section. This was rated at 9.5 out of 10. I got on the bike and started the warm up. No Problems and the trainer is really solid. After the warm up, there are 7 90 sec intervals at full power with 90sec rests in between. I started and felt real good but my DVD player really sucks and pauses all the time so 90 secs becomes 120 or there about. By the end of the DVD that was suppose to be a 30 min workout it had become an hour. None the Less it was a great workout. I was sweating like crazy. I need to get a New DVD Player or Just use my computer.

On another note I replaced my Alexrims FR/DH BH Wheel set with a Pair of Mavic DeeMax Wheels. I got a Screaming Deal on the Wheels and am pretty stoked to Have such a burly set of wheel for the Nomad.

No Rain? A Little Bitter about that but I stayed up Late last night shooting food and got some good photos out of the shoot so it made up for it. Backing up a bit..I by no means am a avid fan of Football but I don't mind it for what it's worth (entertainment) but Big games make my life pretty hectic in the kitchen at work. The Seahawks Did a great job of Blowing out Carolina and for that I am happy for them. After the Game the Owner of the Sea Hawks, Paul Allen, and his Family of 20 or so people came in and Dined in the private room at my restaurant. Very nice people and seemed like they had a great time. Again, I don't mind football but just not a big fan. SuperBowl Sunday should be absolutely a nightmare for me as every Fan who is a member of the WAC should be in the restaurant. Oh Well! That's why I get paid the BIG Bucks! (Yeah Right!) Well, Like I was saying My Food Shoot went well last night and the Food Was Super tasty. Got a couple good photos. The Dish is Smoked Pepper crusted Salmon with Raspberry Chipotle Sauce Paired with Sage and Cilantro Potstickers with Tare Sauce and Herb Oil. A Duo of different tastes. The Prints from the Epson r1800 look good but I have to get my color calibration dialed in. Just purchased a Monaco color calibration unit to profile my printer, scanner, digital camera, and monitor this should take care of my color issues on all of my computers.

Food For Life...

I haven't done a food shoot in a long time! So I have got some time with the recent rains and decided to go for it. I used my Speedotron Force 10 monolights with soft boxes and some food that I picked up from the local Market. I used a Jumbo Prawn, Some Baby carrots, a Basil Parmesan Ravioli, some Chili oil and Pesto. Dish Looked Great going into the shoot and photographed fairly well(first shoot in a while and I was a little Rusty) but tasted Top Notch. I am real critical about these shots so here are the mistakes. 1. To many carrots. 2. Ravioli is Sloppy. 3. Wrong Angle, although this is being really nit picky. If I was to do it over I would Bunch the carrots closer and trim the carrots better. I would slightly season the ravioli with some sort of ground red pepper for aesthetic purposes. This should be a weekly series. It just takes so much time for shoots like this. Not only do you have set up the Camera equipment but have to prepare the food and than shoot it. I really miss my bike but have looked at my other passions while the rain Falls. I recently built computers for my father and mother and was quite impressed with the technology that today's computers offer. Having worked in the Computer industry for a few years (taking a break from cooking) I am well versed in computer technology. I ran a private consulting co for a while, worked as a bench tech and Network administrator. I have built countless computers and can remember the old days when computers were in their first stages of"life". I was lucky. At a young age my father caught the computer bug and along with him so did I. We spent time while I was in elementary school taking classes to learn Basic on Texas instrument computers, We had an AppleIIe, which was great for games, and than we got one of the First PC systems. Fine and dandy as it was there wasn't much support for the systems as they were ULTRA expensive. Than one fine day I saw a Movie called "War Games" with Matthew Broderick. It was over after that. I "had" to Learn how to use the modem that my father used to call in to his pharmacy system. I asked him if he could teach me how to use it and he said"NO, You'll run up the phone Bill". So he went to work that day and I taught myself how to use it. This was the start of a long a extensive foray into computer technology. I learned how to Dial into other peoples computer who had set up , via software, a BBS (bulletin board System). This was where you could post messages, trade information, read Text files, and trade software. As the years went by I ran my own BBS, Met countless people from countries across the world and learned a lot about computers (Both the Good and the Bad) and the Phone Company. So over the past twenty years and the advent of the Internet, I have built many computers for my self. When I first moved to Seattle I was really in to the Computer hardware scene and "overclocking" to juice performance from computer hardware. I built four or so systems over the course of 4 years and thought my current computer was up to par for me but knew it was way out of date as far as computer tech goes. So after building these two computers for my parents I was on a mission to build myself one. I didn't want to go all out as I am about to buy a house, but wanted to get something pretty powerful. So this is what I came up with:

AMD 3200+ 64Bit
4 gigs corsair XMS DDR RAM
ASUS A8n-SLI
2 - 300 GiG Maxtor 16mb Cache 7200 RPM Drives
16x DVD
16x DVD-RW Writer
Scepter NAGA III 20.1 inch 16.9 Monitor
ATI X800 GTO 256MB Video Card
Microsoft Wireless Laser Mouse 6000
ASPIRE 520 Watt Power Supply
ASPIRE X-Plorer ATXB8KLW-BK Black Steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case

Pretty strong system but not to expensive. To the above I added some things that I already Have:

Klipsch 5:1 THX Surround Sound Speakers
Belkin Egro Keyboard Black
250 Gig Western Digital External HArd drive
Epson Perfection 4870 Scanner

Tonight I added and Epson Stylus PHOTO R1800 Printer that absolutely Rocks!

So there it is...If you were to tell me that I would be running a system with almost a terabyte of Storage, 4000 Megs of Ram running at 2.7 GHz (overclocked a full 700mhz) I would tell you that you were crazy. I remember a Bench tech that I worked with named Song. His dream system was a 100 Mhz Pentium with 128megs of Ram and a 10 Gig Hard drive! We thought he was crazy! A 10 Gig HArd drive was $1000. Boy does Tech change Quickly!

Is summer here Yet?

Today's ride was at Lake Sawyer again. I was LAte for my own ride and the other seven riders already started in on the trails but I rode the loop they were on backwards and caught them in the middle. We Rode for 3.5 hours and it was Wet, and Rained the whole time. Still Had a Great time and Got to try out the new Wheelset and Xtra Firm Spring that I put in my Fork. No more Bottoming out and the Wheels are Really Strong. I Tacoed My Front Crossmax XL last week at Lake Sawyer on one of the Big Drops. MAVIC Replaced it on their crash replacement program and I was Stoked about that. I really can't wait for Summer. Over the Rain and Cold. Can't wait for the Dry trails and the Long Days! Tomorrow will be a ride at Sea Tac or Tolt and A new computer Build.

Mountain Bike Life!

It's Been COLD... Finally!!! So after 10 weeks of waiting, my new NOMAD finally arrived. I ordered the Fox 36rc2 TALAS Air fork with it. The whole time I have been waiting I really had wished I had gotten the New FOX VAN 36rc2. When we opened the BOX from santa cruz today guess what was on on top, the New VAN 36rc2. A shipping error was made and the VAN was shipped instead of the TALAS. The LBS said they could fix it or give me a refund on the difference. Although I would have to wait for the TALAS to come in (which has been on back order for 2 months and no sign of a shipping date). Santa Cruz also stated that The DHX 5.0 air shock I got on my frame was the Last one in their recent shipment and would also be a while before they got more from Fox. So I had them Put the Van36rc2. (Secertly cheering!)

Road Bike Life!

Did My Twenty Mile Loop This morning with Great Success!
